Inner Self Healing

Dr Prem is an experienced General Practitioner and surgeon who has used the Relaxation Response as a complementary therapy within general practice for many years. The Relaxation Response does not exclusively belong to any religion or organisation – we can all elicit this response after a little practice. It can help reduce stress, ‘slow down’ our body systems so that we may feel inner peace, and contribute to improved health and wellbeing.

Medical Acupuncture

Dr. Prem is an experienced General Practitioner and surgeon who has used acupuncture as a complementary therapy within general practice for many years. He practices western medical acupuncture, an adaptation of Chinese acupuncture using current knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology, and the principles of evidence-based medicine.

Dr Prem MBBS, FRCS (Edin & Glas), FRCSI, Dip.The. (Cardiff) Member of the British Medical Acupuncture Society and the Chinese Medical Institute.

Introduction Acupuncture is now used extensively as part of the management of many medical conditions. For example, 80% of German physicians use acupuncture for chronic pain, as well as 400,000 physicians in North America. It is widely used in UK general practice and NHS pain clinics, and even more so with chiropractitioners, naturopaths and veterinarians.

How does the doctor make a diagnosis?

After taking a detailed medical history and a careful examination, a course of treatment will be offered which, depending on the patient’s condition and suitability, can be between one and six sessions.

What treatment will I receive?

Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine needles at specific points along various meridians in order to unblock the flow of Qi (chi) through the body. It is a painless and relaxing treatment. Patients with needle phobia, or who are unsuitable for needle insertions, will be offered another form of management.

Is the treatment safe?

Studies by the British Medical Acupuncture Society and the British Acupuncture Council, involving at least 32,000 consultations, found “no serious adverse events”, concluding that “acupuncture seems, in skilled hands, one of the safer forms of medical intervention.” Rosey Grandage, Open University. About the practitioner Dr Prem has been a qualified medical practitioner since 1973, obtaining fellowships in surgery, a Diploma in Therapeutics, and membership of the British Medical Acupuncture Society. He has been a General Practitioner in St Davids and Solva for over 20 years, using acupuncture as a complementary therapy for chronic pain, muscular-skeletal conditions, headache (including migraine), gastro-intestinal conditions, elderly patients unable to take oral medication, and palliative care.
