Art of Viniyoga – Yoga Foundation Course

March 14 - March 17

The Art of Viniyoga

The Sadhana Mala Art of Viniyoga course will give you a thorough grounding in the principles that underpin Viniyoga in a practical and enjoyable way. This is an equivalent to the BWY Foundation Course, although experience shows that it not only serves as a Foundation Course for students who have not done one before, but is also of interest to experienced students and teachers trained in other approaches, because of its strong approach-specific content

There will be considerable study of some of the major themes of the Yoga Sutras as well as an exploration of many of the principles that inform the practice of asana and pranayama. You will also be introduced to the chanting of Yoga Sutras and we will practice this on each weekend.

Why do this Course

This course is ideal for keen students who want to understand the principles of Yoga and develop their own practice.

It is also a primary requirement for continuing on to the Yoga Teacher Training course, even though the Foundation Course itself is not specifically directed at teaching.

This course is also perfect for more experienced students from a different background wishing to understand Viniyoga in some depth and for qualified teachers from other trainings who are interested in doing the Art of Individual Teaching.

You Will Learn

Practice Planning:
Understanding practice that is efficient, safe, inspiring and supports our lives. We will explore sequencing of postures, counter postures, dynamic/static work and the role of variations and modifications.

Breathing Techniques & Meditation:
We will practice various pranayama techniques and study their application and theory behind them. We will develop our understanding of how the breath interacts with the body to enhance the effects of the postures. We will explore breath in relationship to meditative techniques.

Yoga Philosophy:
We will delve into Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra – considering the main themes and reflecting on their relevance now. Are they important to our journey? How do they fit in with other teachings – like those of hatha yoga?

The Course Format

Notionally 60 hrs scheduled typically as 7 days (intro day + 2 weekends), supplemented by significant online learning and video material, and simple home study.

There is no formal homework, but please note that the online study material is an essential part of the course contributing approx. 1/3 material.

Please note that this course is not a teaching qualification.

At least one of the following:

  • Completion of aYs/Sadhana Mala ‘Beyond Asana’ introductory course.
  • Regular attendance in a class for a minimum of 2 years.
  • Individual tuition with a Viniyoga, aYs or an equivalent tutor.
  • Some experience of Viniyoga e.g. attendance at a workshop or retreat by a recognised tutor.

This course will be run as a single introductory day, followed by 2 three-day weekends (Fri-Sun). Prior to each weekend, participants will be given short films to watch and make notes on as preparation. These films are bespoke – made specifically for this course by Sadhana Mala and contain significant content. This means that we can more effectively utilise our time together to deepen theory and focus on practice and application. Of course, it also means that some of the core teachings can be watched and re-watched by you at home to review and consolidate your understandings.
